Why can veterinary bills be expensive?
We understand that veterinary bills can be expensive and sometimes it is difficult to comprehend the cost of certain procedures, especially when it can be cheaper to visit the doctor.
- Unlike for people, the Government does not financially support veterinary services, nor is there Medicare, the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, or bulk billing for pets.
- We are so fortunate that our Government provides comprehensive health care at minimal cost for people.
- This can sometimes contribute to the inaccurate perception of how much health services truly cost in Australia.
- This perception is then carried over into the veterinary world and people sometimes believe that veterinary health services costs should reflect the cost of human health services.
Routine procedures
For routine procedures like de-sexing, veterinarians have always reduced the cost of these to assist with minimising the occurrence of unwanted pregnancies and unwanted pets. This reduction in cost will always exist, although costs increase over the years due to inflation and this applies to all the services and products that we offer.
Advanced procedures and services
As veterinary science has advanced, so too have the services that we offer. For a while now we have had specialised services such as dental radiology, ultrasonography, radiology, acupuncture, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, pathology and advanced surgical techniques. These services require trained veterinarians and nursing staff to ensure animals are safely monitored throughout their entire stay with us.
Standards of care
All of our vets and vet nurses are provided with regular training to ensure an excellent standard of care is delivered. The equipment used to assist with this care is continually maintained and upgraded, all of which contributes considerably to the overhead costs of the business.
The message we are trying to share is that as veterinary professionals we do understand that pet bills can be expensive, but with that being said we are an independent entity with no outside support, unlike most human medical hospitals. The services and products that we provide you and your pets come at a cost to us and to you.
Minimising costs
We always try to minimise costs where we can, and do not recommend procedures unless they are absolutely necessary. Estimates for procedures will be provided and discussed in detail before a procedure takes place. We encourage you to never feel afraid to discuss any concerns that you may have regarding costs, with one of our veterinarians.
We are here to help, and if there is a plan we can work out that better suits you and your pet we will endeavour to do so.
Pet insurance
If you have recently purchased a new pet we highly recommend pet insurance. There are many insurance companies out there, so we encourage you to compare and find one that best suits you.
